The
origin of dreams is elucidated in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras as ’result of
incidental transition of the mind from its conscious to unconscious state’. The
natural tendencies of one’s mind and body are reflected in the sub-conscious
state of sleep.
Sub-conscious
mind created what we see as great discoveries of nature’s benevolence to
humanity. Isaac Newton initially observed falling of a ripened apple while
sitting under a tree, while later on he had a dream, wherein sub-conscious mind
offered a scientific explanation of the gravitational force. The intensity of
visual reflection in dreams is more powerful than any fact spoken or heard.
Type and quality of dream largely depends upon one’s intrinsic nature as also
bent of mind. Capacity of mind is so great that solution to
many a problem is visualized by the dreamer and if the subject remembers the
dream, the solution is found.
Good, pious thoughts must remain as our constant
companion. Our acts and activities must contain sacred intuitions, so that
through dreams we obtain guidance for continuing smoothly on life’s journey. It
is not that physical and biological faculties lead to what we dream. If such
were the case, then how persons deprived of eye- sight had dreamt so great and
sublime thoughts that it is beyond anyone’s perception to believe their
creations. (Contributed by R.K. Sharma, ROF member.)
RETIRED,
NOT TIRED: JUST GO FOR IT!
As
a student, you wanted to become a professional. During employment, you were too
busy earning money and accomplishing career-oriented goals. As a parent, you
were busy raising family and providing for your child’s education Perhaps you
did not have the time or even aptitude to understand questions like who you
were, what the real purpose of your life was, what your real interests were.
Retirement is the time to ponder over all these questions and accomplish what
you really wanted to do from the core of your heart. Retirement gives you ample
opportunity to discover the real purpose of life and pursue activities that
express your true self.
To
fulfill only personal and selfish interests is restrictive. You need to reach
beyond, to serve a higher purpose that benefits all. All your life you have
taken so much. You exploited natural resources and degraded the environment to
make life more comfortable. What have you done or given in return? Retirement
is the time when you could give something back to society.
Work
now for those causes you’ve always believed in. Pursue one or more of these
purposes in your retirement, helping the needy doing social work and community
networking, promoting an environmental cause, starting a home for the needy
elderly, conserving heritage, fighting corruption, writing a book, inventing
something useful and translating inspiring literature from one language to
another. Though they may not be very rewarding financially, these pursuits are
a source of immense happiness and fulfillment, which is the core desire of all
human beings. Sometimes you may even spend some money from your own pocket to
benefit others. Remember: There is no joy like the joy of serving others. (B.K.Trehan-Times of
LAUGH A WHILE: Husband: Darling, if I do
not survive this operation, promise me you will marry this doctor.
Wife: Oh, why do you say this?
Husband: That is the only way to have my revenge! (Wg.Com. K.Ravindran)
